When it comes to an injury, prevention is better than cure, and therefore CAV promotes the provision of safe goods and services in the marketplace, along with industry compliance of mandatory safety standards.
With the Fair Trading Act 1999, the Minister for Consumer Affairs has the power to place interim and/or permanent bans on the supply of goods or services that are likely to cause death or serious injury to any person, either directly or indirectly.
Interim bans

Dangerous Christmas Toys Seized
Consumer Affairs Victoria completed its annual pre-Christmas toy inspection for 2008.
The blitz focusses on making sure unsafe toys are removed from sale before they make it under the Christmas tree.
Inspectors and regional staff visited 120 suppliers in metropolitan and regional Victoria at 35 locations around the State resulting in more than 900 unsafe toys being seized.
