Search the register of business names
To check whether a business you are dealing with has a registered business name, search the Victorian Names Register on our Business name extract page.
The register shows the:
- business name
- business registration number;
- nature of business
- trading suburb
- trading postcode
- date of registration
- date of deregistration
- date of renewal.
National business names register from 28 May 2012
From 28 May 2012, business names registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria will be transferred to the new national business names register managed by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). You will be able to search the national business names register on the ASIC website from that date.

You cannot use the register to confirm the availability of a business name for registration. There might be other restrictions that affect your application.
To find out if your proposed business name can be registered, you must lodge a business name application. The fee is fully refundable if your application is unsuccessful.

Purchase a business name extract
An extract can be useful to anyone entering into a contract with a business operating under a registered business name. To find out more details about a business, view our Business name extract page. As well as the details available from the online register, an extract includes the:
- date business commenced
- date business ceased
- ABN (if known)
- current and former owners, their addresses, and dates they commenced/ceased
- current and former registered addresses and dates they commenced/ceased
- current and former business addresses and dates they commenced/ceased
- current postal address and date it commenced.
