Role

The Estate Agents Council (EAC) reports to and advises the Minister for Consumer Affairs on:

  • the operation of the Estate Agents Act 1980 (the Act) and its regulations
  • the efficiency and effectiveness of industry regulation under the Act and its regulations
  • services provided by estate agents
  • industry developments.

The EAC also undertakes research projects and advises on applications for grants from the Victorian Property Fund. For more information, view our Victorian Property Fund page.

The EAC has no role in the administration of the Act or the regulations.

Mission, vision and goals

The EAC's mission is to add value to the public policy discourse by performing its functions as described above.

Its vision is for a fair real estate marketplace which:

  • balances the interests of sellers, buyers, tenants and landlords
  • serves the industry well
  • has the public's confidence.

The EAC's goals include:

  • promoting appropriate standards of conduct and competency
  • educating consumers and industry on their rights, responsibilities and changes to the law
  • monitoring emerging trends and developments
  • providing the Minister with fearless and frank advice
  • understanding and representing the industry
  • collaborating with Consumer Affairs Victoria to achieve the best results possible
  • assessing regulation under the Act and the need for further regulation or alternatives, such as deregulation or co-regulation
  • making recommendations about applications for grants from the Victorian Property Fund (VPF).
