Used car vehicle status check

Before buying a used car from a private seller, check that it:

  • is not stolen
  • has no money owing on it
  • is not on the written-off vehicle register.

You can check a vehicle’s status by visiting the Personal Property Securities Register website. You will need to quote the car’s registration number or the vehicle identification number (VIN).

Whenever possible it is best to physically sight the car and the VIN before checking its status on the Personal Property Securities Register. This will help you to avoid being scammed. For more information, view our Scams section.
