You can generally ask for a refund or replacement when a product does not do a specific job or achieve a specific purpose, if:
- before buying, you told the store or salesperson what you wanted the product to be able to do, and
- you relied on the store’s advice when choosing the product.
The problem with the product must be major or unable to be fixed.
Example:
Dylan tells a car dealer he wants a car that can tow his boat. The dealer sells him a car, saying it will do the job. That night Dylan reads the safety manual and discovers the new car cannot safely tow the type of boat that he owns. Dylan is entitled to return the car to the dealer.
