Does a landlord have to give rent receipts?

A landlord must provide you with a written receipt immediately if you made the payment in person, or within five business days if you requested a receipt but did not pay in person. There is a penalty if they fail to do so. You can report a landlord for failing to comply with these requirements using our Residential accommodation complaint. The landlord must keep a record of rent payments for 12 months and provide a the tenant with a copy of the record if requested within the 12 months.

For more information see our Rent receipts page.

As Victoria's consumer affairs regulator, we help landlords, agents and tenants understand their rights and responsibilities.
