Who is responsible for smoke alarms in a rented home?

There must be at least one smoke alarm on or near the ceiling in every storey of a house in Victoria. The landlord must ensure smoke alarms are installed and kept in working condition.

Smoke alarms must meet Australian Standard AS 3786-1993.

If you want additional smoke alarms, you can try to negotiate with the landlord about sharing the cost.

As Victoria's consumer affairs regulator, we help landlords, agents and tenants understand their rights and responsibilities.
