An unlicensed motor car trader has been fined $5000 for offering to sell 17 motor cars online.

Benjamin Marsh pleaded guilty in Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court to breaching the Motor Car Traders Act 1986 by carrying on a business of trading in motor cars without holding a motor car trader’s licence.

The breaches were committed between June 2011 and May 2012. Mr Marsh advertised the cars on Gumtree from his Preston home.

By law, anyone who buys, sells or exchanges four or more cars in a 12-month period (or offers to do so, including if they do this as an agent for someone else), is deemed to be a motor car trader, and required to be licensed.

The court fined Mr Marsh $5000, without conviction, plus costs of $400.
