An unregistered builder must pay $9600 compensation to a consumer for carrying out substandard building work.

Christopher Williams of Wantirna was also fined $4350 after being convicted in the Melbourne Magistrate’s Court of a total of four breaches of the Building Act 1993, Fair Trading Act 1999 and Domestic Building Contracts Act 1995.

The breaches included taking a deposit of more than 10 per cent and carrying out major domestic building work while unregistered.

Mr Williams was also ordered to pay court costs of $850.
