Consumer Affairs Victoria has started legal action against Elderly Citizens Help Organisation (ECHO) Inc, Michael Nazzari and John O’Hanlon, for alleged breaches of Victorian fundraising laws.
We allege that between April 2016 and May 2017, ECHO:
- conducted fundraising activities when not registered to do so
- did not bank money raised from fundraising appeals in the legally required way
- did not keep sufficient records as required by law.
We also allege that Mr Nazzari, 68, of Oakleigh, and Mr O’Hanlon, 69, of Pascoe Vale, knowingly authorised or permitted ECHO to commit the alleged offences.
ECHO was previously a registered fundraiser, but is currently not registered.
The matter will be heard at the Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on 4 June.
