A rooming house operator has been convicted and fined $800 in Melbourne Magistrate’s Court for failing to refund rent to a former tenant.
George Maatouk unlawfully evicted a tenant in a Glenroy rooming house in December 2007. The tenant was not refunded rent that he had paid up front.
In March 2008, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) ordered that Mr Maatouk and his company, Northern Suburbs Accommodation Centre Pty Limited, pay the man $360 for rent and compensation for unlawful eviction. Mr Maatouk did not pay the amount until days before the court hearing on 2 February this year.
Mr Maatouk pleaded guilty to one count of breaching the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 by failing to comply with the VCAT order. He was fined $800 and ordered to pay $1200 in legal costs.
