A Dandenong man has been fined $4,000 by the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to four charges relating to falsely representing a car’s odometer reading in online advertisements.
Consumer Affairs Victoria took action against Mithila Domingo, 28, after receiving information from carsales.com.au that he had placed a number of ads on its website.
Our investigation showed that, between July 2013 and August 2014, Mr Domingo bought four cars from auctioneer Manheim Pty Ltd. He later advertised those same cars for sale on carsales.com.au at a higher price than he had paid. The odometer readings stated in the ads were between approximately 90,000 and 190,000 kilometres less than the cars’ true odometer readings.
The court found that advertising a car for sale is an act done in the course of selling a motor car, irrespective of whether the car is ultimately sold.
No conviction was recorded.
