A St Kilda rooming house operator has been fined $4000 after failing to refund bond money to four overseas backpackers.
Sean Vanden Driesen was convicted in Melbourne Magistrate’s Court of breaches of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997. He failed to comply with a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal order to refund bond money, demanded a bond in excess of two weeks rent and failed to give the bond money to the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority.
Mr Vanden Driesen also breached the Act by failing to provide bond lodgement forms, condition reports and statements of rights and duties to the residents.
Mr Vanden Driesen was convicted of 12 breaches of the Act, and fined $4000 with costs of $2340.
