Professional engineers registration - Overview

Skip listen and sharing tools

The Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019 (the Act) commences on 1 July 2021.

The Act will require you to be registered with the Business Licensing Authority (BLA) to provide professional engineering services in a prescribed area of engineering in Victoria, or from a location outside Victoria, if the services are intended for Victoria.

You will not be required to be registered if you work under the direct supervision of a registered practising professional engineer or only in accordance with a prescriptive standard.

The five areas of engineering prescribed for registration in the Act are:

  • civil engineering
  • structural engineering
  • electrical engineering
  • mechanical engineering, and
  • fire safety engineering.

From 1 July 2021, registration will only be mandatory for professional engineers who practise in, or who want to apply for registration to practise in, the building industry. In addition to being registered, your registration must also be endorsed to allow you to provide professional engineering services in the building industry.

If you are already registered with the Victorian Building Authority, under the Building Act 1993, as a building practitioner in the category of engineer, your registration will automatically be transferred to the BLA and you will be registered and endorsed under the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019. For more information, view Registration of building engineers.
