New car pre-delivery check

New car dealers should examine the car before you collect it and demonstrate its features to you at the time of delivery. However, it might also be worth inspecting the car yourself.

Check:

  • the bodywork for dents and chips in the paintwork
  • the date the car was built
  • the interior trim for cuts and scratches
  • that there is a spare tyre, tool kit and jack
  • that the lights and indicators are working properly
  • for the accessories or extras you ordered
  • that the features specified in the contract are included.

You may also wish to take the car for a test drive with the sales representative to check for mechanical faults. If you identify any, consider your rights under consumer guarantees contained in the Australian Consumer Law.
