A business owner whose awning installation company is the focus of a public warning notice, is now operating under a new business name.

Andrew Valk, 56, of Malvern, who operated Shade Solutions and Studio Shade Australia, has established a new business name, SSA Motorised Awnings. His businesses supply and install outdoor motorised awnings, retractable roofs and blinds for residential and commercial properties.

Valk's businesses operate under the registered company SSA (Vic) Pty Ltd (ACN 651 260 436). They are based in a warehouse in Dandenong South, but operate across Melbourne and beyond.

We are taking legal action against Valk, alleging that he failed to respond by the due date to a Show Cause Notice under the Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012, and breached the law by continuing to trade.

The matter has been adjourned until 25 March.

Acting Director Consumer Affairs Victoria David Joyner urged people to avoid entering into an agreement with Valk’s company under any of its business names.

Joyner said customers who had contacted Consumer Affairs Victoria alleged that they paid to have products installed, but the work was never completed and on most occasions, no refunds were provided.

To date, we have received more than 170 complaints about the company under its different business names.

‘Consumers who want motorised blinds and awnings installed should find another business to supply and install these products,’ Joyner said.

He urged customers who had suffered financial loss to contact Consumer Affairs Victoria, and for the warning to be shared with consumers and businesses to help ensure the public is protected from the company’s practices.
