Consumer Affairs Victoria has launched its new ‘Don't buy a regret’ campaign, empowering Victorians to make smarter used car purchases and avoid making costly mistakes.

The education campaign provides practical advice to help consumers understand their rights when navigating the used car market and help motor car traders meet their obligations.

The campaign also reinforces Consumer Affairs Victoria’s important role in helping consumers if something goes wrong and makes the case for buying from a licensed trader.

While buying from a private seller can sometimes seem like a bargain, purchasing from a licensed motor car trader comes with important protections. Depending on the car, that can include:

  • a statutory warranty
  • a 3-day-cooling-off period (unless you take the car straight away)
  • access to compensation of up to $40,000 through the Motor Car Traders Guarantee Fund.

The campaign will run across print, social media, digital, and out-of-home advertising from August to October.

The Victorian Government is also proposing new reforms to strengthen consumer protections against unlicensed trading and modernise the regulatory framework for motor car trading across the state.
