Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court has convicted Mill Park resident Iftiaz Ali of odometer tampering and ordered him to serve a community corrections order.

The Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria prosecuted Mr Ali, 32, after he bought a 2004 Volkswagen Golf with an odometer reading of 188,329 kilometres on 27 April 2012, then sold it with a reading of 92,804 km about one month later.

Under the Motor Car Traders Act 1986, it is illegal to tamper with a car’s odometer or install a substitute odometer.

On 17 June, the court found Mr Ali guilty of breaching the Act and placed him on a 12-month corrections order. The order requires him to perform 250 hours of unpaid community work in 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay costs of $370.
