Consumer Affairs Victoria has successfully prosecuted a Dandenong motor car trader that engaged in odometer tampering and other unlawful practices.

The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court ordered Melbourne Auto Group Pty Ltd to pay fines totaling $45,000 and compensation to consumers of $33,742.

The odometers on four cars it bought at auction were altered while in the company’s possession, in one case by nearly 300,000 kilometres. Three of the cars were sold to consumers.

The company also admitted to falsifying records, failing to display the particulars of cars offered for sale, and failing to advise the Business Licensing Authority of a change of trading address.
