Minimum energy efficiency standards: Hot water standard

Definition: From 1 March 2027, ‘energy efficient water heater’ means a heat pump water heater or electric-boosted solar water heater that complies with either:

(a) the minimum energy savings specified in Table B2D2b in Part B2 of the Plumbing Code of Australia or

(b) the minimum small-scale technology certificates specified in Table B2D2a in Part B2 of the Plumbing Code of Australia.

  • No hot water
Provide a hot water to the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry.

Immediately - required under current minimum standards 

  • Any gas or electric hot water system
Install an energy efficient water heater that meets the definition above
When an existing system permanently fails or cannot be repaired
  • LPG hot water system

Install an efficient water heater

OR

Install a replacement LPG hot water system
When an existing system permanently fails or cannot be repaired

Where to find energy efficiency ratings

Energy efficiency ratings are displayed on products at point of sale or in product manuals, making it easy to purchase an appliance that meets the standard. You can also check the VEU Product Register to find a system that meets the standard.
