It may be necessary to make changes to an existing bond if details change after the bond has been lodged, or if you realise the information on the bond is incorrect. Correcting information is important, as you may experience issues claiming a bond at the end of a rental agreement.
Changes to bonds are made using the Residential Tenancies Bond Authority (RTBA) website. The rental provider must be registered to make changes to a bond.
If the people on your bond change, complete a renter transfer or rental provider transfer.
Some details cannot be changed, including the current bond amount and the bond’s lodgement date.
Rental providers can request changes to:
- The rented property address
- A renter(s) name
- A renter(s) date of birth.
Renters can make changes to:
- Their email address
- Their mobile number
Check current details
You can check the current details of your bond using the Look up your bond or Bond search function on the RTBA website. You will see the bond summary, which will tell you all the current details of your bond.
Change rented property address, renter’s name or renter’s date of birth
Rental providers can update a rented property address, the renter’s name, and the renter’s date of birth. If a renter notifies their rental provider of changes to these details, the rental provider is obligated to submit a correction.
Make changes by clicking the ‘Correct bond details’ button on the bond summary.
Rental providers need to provide documentation to support changes to a rented property address (e.g. the rental agreement or a council notification) or a renter’s name (e.g. a change of name certificate or a marriage certificate). The RTBA will review the supporting documentation and correct the bond.
Rental providers do not need documentation to update a renter’s date of birth.
Change renter’s email address or mobile number
Renters on the bond can update their own email address and mobile number. The rental provider cannot change these details. Renters can only change their own details, not the details of any other renter on the bond.
Make changes by clicking the ‘Update contact details’ button on the bond summary.
Renters need to authenticate their identity through Service Victoria before they can update their details.
These details do not need to the reviewed by the RTBA, so they will be updated as soon as the renter submits the change.
Homes Victoria bonds cannot be changed
If a bond is funded by Homes Victoria, neither the renter nor rental provider can change any details. This is because the details on the bond must match the information given on a Homes Victoria loan voucher.
